jimjamjo Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 Hi We left the Trafford Centre at 9.30 tonight and got about 400 yards before the engine suddenly died. Tried bumping it as the speedo went down but nothing. Electrics all fine and no warning lights. Full tank of diesel 3 days ago. Turned over fine and oil light out within 3 secs. Checked the long row of fuses under the steering wheel and the couple near the battery. Engine bay wiring seemed intact. Thats as far as I got with no torch and 0 degrees outside. :D AA arrived and checked it over - -checked battery +ve-checked injection pump +ve-loosened injector pipes and saw fuel leaking out when I turned over the engine-Opened the air filter casing and shone a torch into the sensor pipe-resorted to Cold Start in the air intake which started the engine but died as soon as he stopped spraying-disconnected the outlet on the fuel filter and put a pump thing inline with the fuel pipe He then gave up and towed us home even though we only had basic cover. Any ideas - could it be relay 30 and what does it do? Cheers Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 27, 2005 Author Report Posted November 27, 2005 apparently its relay 109 not 30http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=116708&page=2god knows what to test for on it though Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 27, 2005 Author Report Posted November 27, 2005 Could it be a closed EGR anti -shudder valve? I'm getting the glowplug light as normal so probably not relay 109? Any help much appreciated Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 28, 2005 Author Report Posted November 28, 2005 When I came to take off relay 109, it was part way out of its socket so that could be the cause? Just recharged the battery and it almost started before I ran the battery down. Plenty of bubbles clearing through the fuel line from when the AA disconnected the filter. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 When you try to start, does it start but die straight away? Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 28, 2005 Author Report Posted November 28, 2005 No - it almost starts. I'm gonna bleed an injector and try some Cold Start when the batterys a bit stronger Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Be wary of cold start, if your valves don't seal right you can get a flash-back! Should be fine though! Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 28, 2005 Author Report Posted November 28, 2005 Starting with Cold start and almost runs by itself Looks like some airs getting in the pipe. Just checked the fuel filter and cant see a sealing o ring :o Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 Just about to fit the o ring etc There's a big patch of black soot on the floor from the exhaust after the last time I tried turning it over - any ideas :) Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 Bugger... This is a nightmare - looks like the fuel was a red herring. There was an o-ring in place just didn't see it. Anyway, its very unlikely that its fuel related. I've cracked and bleed 2 injectors and there's fuel spurting out. Just towed the car round the block and it just wont start - revs go up to 1100 while in gear but doesn't feel like its firing. Dies as soon a clutch goes in Has it got an immobilizer or could some electrical short cause this? Quote
bigdaddy Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Dont know much about desiels,,,,but it sounds like engine timing or fuel pump timing,,,,,,,,almost starts but wont,,,,,,I dont think it is the lack of fuel,,,think it maybe fuel pump timing (((((though I could be wrong and usually I am :) )))) :) Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 With the immobiliser it will start, run for half a second then stop. This would allow it to run on easy-start as the imobiliser cuts the fuel. But the door LED is a dead give away. Timing is a possibility. As is a blocked exhaust or collapsed catalytic converter. Quote
bigdaddy Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Are you still trying to start the gal with the fuel you bought 3 days ago,,,,,,,maybe contamanated((think I spelt that right :) )and the easy start is starting the gal,,,but the fuel is grap!!!! Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 Cheers but its almost definately not timing. Its run really smoothly for the past couple of weeks - starting straightaway. The belt looks tight on the cogs and the engine feels smooth as its being towed. I've just checked the tippex is still there on the cam and fuel cogs and line up with the tippex on the backing plate so thats not it Quote

I've double checked the receipt and it was diesel :) Quote

Thats not the case - there's loads of unburned vapour coming out the back as we tow it and there's all the soot on the floor. Also there's fuel spurting out when you bleed and injector door LED ? jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 blocked exhaust or collapsed catalytic converter. still getting plenty of smoke out of the exhaust but I did drop a nut down the exhaust pipe when I changed the manifold gasket a few weeks ago  Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 When your cranking the engine the fuel will run. The minute you release the key to the running position the engine will cut out. I would be tempted to disconnect the exhaust from the cat back and see if it makes a difference. As for the nut, I presume it was past the turbo..... Quote

As for the nut, I presume it was past the turbo..... Cheers M8y It shows 700-900 rpm as its cranked and then dies as soon as you let go. But it does kick out a smoke cloud while being towed in gear. Is the door LED a clue? yes the nut was in the downpipe - couldn't fish it out with a magnet Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Does the LED come on when you release the key? Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 No just battery light. Oil light goes out after a bit of cranking. I don't think I've got any door warning lights... Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Nah chap, the LED on the driver's door...... Quote
jimjamjo Posted November 30, 2005 Author Report Posted November 30, 2005 Nah chap, the LED on the driver's door...... Oh that one. No it comes on for 4 secs when you put the key in and then goes off and stays off whether you crank it or not Quote
bigdaddy Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 I maybe a little stupid here  ,,,,,but do you have a spare key,,,,,I would try that,,,,,,,this post sounds as if your chip in the key is missing or faulty  Quote
